If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll all know my love for London, and for its food! Since I began a naturopathic nutrition training at CNM there, I come even more often. I thought I’d share my favorite places, and Ottolenghi is for sure at the top of my list!
It’s actually my boyfriend who introduced me to the original place in Islington – there is one there, and others in Notting Hill, Belgravia and Spittafields – at the very beginning of our relationship. At the time, I was just beginning to get into healthy food and I didn’t know this cook, who happens to be an actual superstar in his scope!
As soon as I got there, I fell in love with the place: everything is white – the walls, the ceiling, the tables and chairs – so that the food looks even more bright and vibrant. And what food! It’s a vegetarian paradise, even though you’ll find meat and fish as well. There is plenty of salads laid our on the counter, and a whole window display of cakes which would make anyone really hungry!
You can have lunch there or have a take-away (if one day I am lucky enough to live in London, I might as well find an apartment near one of the delis!).
If you have lunch or dinner there, you can choose to fill your plate with 3 or 4 salads, or with a hot dish and a few salads. I always go for a selections of veggie salads but my boyfriend always gets a piece of meat or fish and I must say it looks absolutely divine. My favorite things out of everything they offer is the smoked aubergine and their hummus, which is the best I ever tasted in my life. Trust me, trying the hummus is enough of an excuse to go there!
What I really appreciate at Ottolenghi is that every dressing is wonderful and takes out any ingredient to an another level. Simple green beans can then become amazing! Another thing is that there are options for everyone: they display the vegetarian salads, but if you take a look at the menu, you have the option of choosing from the hot dishes which include fish and meat. Ottolenghi is not one of those veggie of vegan places where carnivores would be reluctant to come in. And I bet the beautifulness and yumminess of the amazing salads would even make them forget they’re more options on the menu!
Since my first time there, I went to the other locations which are just as good as the Islington one: Belgravia, Notting Hill and Spittafields. And for a fancier lunch or dinner, I couldn’t encourage you enough to book a table at Nopi, Yotam Ottolenghi’s and Sami Tamimi’s newest restaurant, which I’ll talk about in another post…
